Criminology, Penology & Victimology

Introduction

Criminology is the scientific study of crime, criminals, and the social and psychological factors that lead to criminal behavior. It seeks to understand the causes of crime, patterns of criminal activity, and the impact of crime on society. Criminologists analyze the nature, extent, and control of criminal behavior to aid in prevention and law enforcement strategies.

Penology is the branch of criminology that focuses on the treatment, punishment, and rehabilitation of offenders. It examines the various methods of punishment, the prison system, correctional measures, and alternatives to incarceration. Penology aims to balance societal protection with the reform of the offender.

Victimology studies the victims of crime, their experiences, and the psychological, social, and legal impact of crime on them. It emphasizes understanding victim behavior, patterns of victimization, and the relationship between victims and offenders. Victimology also seeks to improve victim support systems and ensure justice for victims.
